Got Books?

WELCOME

Welcome to BookBinding By Brian. Here at Book Binding By Brian we are all about your books. While I do not do new books, primarily due to lack of equipment, I still strive to be here for you to help you by repairing your damaged memories and to make it a treasure you will be proud to pass on to another member of your family.

Let's face it: things happen that we had no intention of allowing, whether we accidentally dropped a book down the stairs, or left it on the car in a rainstorm, or just the effects of unintentional wear and tear. Aging is a fact of life - whether it be people or books. It is my desire to help you get that damage dealt with so you can be on your way.

You could reach for the duct tape and elmers glue, but before you do, think of what kind of effect your choice will have on your book. Will it be for better, or worse? Then call or email me and see how I can help you resolve the issues at hand.

By the way, I would never advise you to use duct tape or packing tape on your literary treasures. Why? because the adhesive in duct tape will seep through the tape, come out the back, and make a gooey mess on both sides. Packing tape is similar in that the adhesive will break down within a few years and you will be left with a clear plastic bookmark, plus a lot of yellowish-brownish crud on the pages. Take care of what you have, and you will be proud to pass it on to your children or grandchildren.

What I can and can't do

Some types of books I do are personal Bibles, family Bibles, grandma's cookbook, and handbooks for work. Books I am unable to deal with are textbooks or pocket/mass-market paperbacks, or similar. I do not have the ability at this time to deal in spiral or glued bindings. However that may change in the future. Check out business policies for more stipulations. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Is my book too old to repair?

I have worked on books dated (according to the flyleaf) of anywhere from the 1840s all the way to 1990s. I am always willing to stretch the limits. I have had clients come to me with a 30-year old book they described as "OLD". Others come with a book from the 1920s thinking of it as modern. Descriptive words such as antique, vintage, modern, classic, etc. are generally subjective in nature, whether dealing with books, furniture or many other collectibles.

What about the book condition?

I often deal with books that have been through fires, loose bindings, detached covers and other miscellaneous damage. All have been accepted by the owners as substantial improvement. While it will never be like it was when new, it will still be much better, much cleaner than when you brought it. Again, it is my intention to preserve and improve your book for your reading/viewing pleasure.

Do I need to clean out all the papers, etc., from my book?

No, not unless you want to. I generally ignore a small amount of papers. Bookmarks are thicker, so I will set them aside for the duration of the repair process. At least one book had so many papers and other memorabilia inserted over the decades that I needed to put everything in an envelope for return to the owner.
